The First-Time Parent's Guide to Baby Sleep: Safe, Natural, and Stress-Free

Sleep: The Topic Every New Parent Obsesses Over

If there's one thing new parents talk about more than anything else, it's sleep — or the lack of it. Understanding how newborns sleep, what's safe, and how to create a comfortable sleep environment can make a world of difference in those early months. Here's what you need to know.

How Newborns Actually Sleep

Newborns sleep a lot — typically 14 to 17 hours a day — but in short bursts of 2 to 4 hours. Their sleep cycles are shorter than adults', and they spend more time in light, active sleep. This is completely normal and serves an important developmental purpose. It does, however, mean that sleeping through the night is a milestone that takes time — usually several months.

Safe Sleep: The Non-Negotiables

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends the following for safe infant sleep:

  • Back to sleep — Always place baby on their back for every sleep, until age 1
  • Firm, flat surface — Use a firm mattress in a safety-approved crib or bassinet
  • Keep the crib bare — No pillows, bumpers, loose blankets, or stuffed animals in the sleep space
  • Room sharing, not bed sharing — The AAP recommends baby sleep in your room (but not your bed) for at least the first 6 months
  • Avoid overheating — Keep the room at a comfortable temperature (68–72°F / 20–22°C) and dress baby in breathable layers

What Baby Wears to Sleep Matters

Breathable, temperature-regulating fabrics are key to safe and comfortable baby sleep. Overdressing is a common cause of overheating, which is a known risk factor. Our bamboo pajama sets are naturally thermoregulating — they keep babies warm when it's cool and cool when it's warm, making them an ideal choice for sleep year-round. Shop bamboo pajamas →

For swaddling newborns, our organic muslin cloths are lightweight and breathable — perfect for keeping baby snug without the risk of overheating.

Creating a Sleep-Friendly Environment

  • White noise — Mimics the sounds of the womb and can help babies settle. A simple fan or white noise machine works well.
  • Darkness — Blackout curtains help signal to baby that it's sleep time, especially as they get older and more aware of light.
  • Consistent routine — A simple wind-down routine (bath, feed, song, sleep) helps babies learn to anticipate sleep from around 6–8 weeks.
  • Cool room temperature — Slightly cooler rooms promote better sleep for babies, just as they do for adults.

A Note on Sleep Training

Sleep training is a personal decision and there's no one-size-fits-all approach. Whether you choose a gradual method, a more structured approach, or simply follow baby's lead, the most important thing is that your baby feels safe and secure. Trust your instincts — you know your baby best.
