What Does GOTS Certified Really Mean? A Parent's Guide to Organic Textile Labels
The Label Jungle Is Real
Walk into any baby store or browse online and you'll see a dizzying array of labels: "natural," "eco-friendly," "non-toxic," "organic." But what do these terms actually mean — and which ones are backed by real standards? As a parent, knowing the difference can help you make smarter, safer choices for your baby.
What Is GOTS?
GOTS stands for the Global Organic Textile Standard — and it's widely considered the gold standard for organic textiles worldwide. To earn GOTS certification, a product must meet strict criteria at every stage of production, from the raw fiber all the way to the finished garment. That includes:
- At least 70% certified organic fibers (95% for "organic" label, 70% for "made with organic" label)
- No toxic dyes, bleaches, or finishing agents
- Safe and fair working conditions throughout the supply chain
- Annual audits by independent, accredited certifiers
In short: GOTS certification means what's on the label is actually true — and verified.
What About OEKO-TEX?
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is another trustworthy certification, but it works differently. Rather than certifying the farming and production process, OEKO-TEX tests the finished product for over 100 harmful substances. A product can be OEKO-TEX certified without being made from organic fibers — it simply means the final item is free from harmful chemicals at the levels tested.
Both certifications are valuable. GOTS is better for verifying the full organic supply chain; OEKO-TEX is great for confirming the finished product is safe for skin contact.
Labels to Be Cautious About
Terms like "natural," "eco," and "green" are largely unregulated and can be used by any brand without third-party verification. They're not necessarily false — but they're not independently verified either. Always look for a recognized certification logo rather than relying on marketing language alone.
